Have You Estimated Your Retirement Benefits?

Social Security retirement income is meant to keep you safe, however it may not fully cover all your specific needs. You should make sure that you are prepared and have all the appropriate documentation as you enter retirement. The Social Security Administration no longer provides yearly paper statements, however you can plan appropriately and stay informed by visiting the Social Security Administration Website at www.ssa.gov/pgm/retirement.htm or by calling their office at 1-800-772-1213.

You should also remember that if you are a teacher or a municipal employee in Connecticut you may have what is known as a ‘Government Pension Offset’. A Government Pension Offset may impact you or your spouse’s retirement benefits if you paid into a state or municipal pension. Know this in time to plan accordingly, even if you have held other employment where you paid into Social Security.

You’ve worked hard for your retirement and should be fully informed on the benefits you will receive. As always, feel free to call my office at 860-278-8888 with any questions or concerns you have related to Social Security. Congressman John B. Larson, Connecticut’s First District.
